Over and over she sang it until Pa came downstairs.
Pa picked her up and carried her upstairs. There was a fuzzy-haired doll in Mama's arms.
"What shall we name your brother, Cordelia?" Pa said.
"Is Mama dead?" Cordelia asked.
Mama said, "I'm dead tired, you better put her to bed, Pa. My honey girl is half
"No I'm not half asleep," Cordelia replied. "Call my brother Shakespeare."
With smiling eyes, Pa said, "What about calling him Kent? Kent was a very loyal person. Kent took care of Cordelia and always stood by her no matter what!"
Cordelia clapped her hands and laughed. "I like that name."
"It's not her brother's first name we should worry about, it's the last!" Ma said.
It was as if an icy cold wind passed through the room, freezing the smiles. It made Cordelia wonder very loud inside herself, what was so all-fired important about a last name?
